Acrylic Painting: Dry brushing Demo (4k)
Переглядів 15 тис.3 роки тому
This is a video illustrating how to use a dry brushing technique to soften edges in acrylic paintings. I have found this technique to be the cornerstone of my acrylic painting skillset! The key is to "step" your values up from the darks to the lights bit by bit for a very soft effect, less steps gives you a hazy or foggy effect. Important: make sure your brush is very dry, and don't add any wat...
Speed Painting: A crazy fast timelapse!

This painting actually took over 6 1/2 hours to complete over a few weeks, but the timelapse makes it look like it was done in around 1 minute :) Sorry for the jumpy video, I'm just an artist whose first love is painting, and videography is just a hobby (I'm getting better, though, I hope :) - Want to learn my methods for designing, drawing, and painting portraits? Acrylic Painting Tip: How to save your paint after each session
Переглядів 3393 роки тому
If you're like me and you don't like to waste paint, here's a tip to help you stretch the life of each tube of paint. NOTE: this can NOT be done with paint that has a skin of dried paint around it, or any chunks of dry paint inside. Also, if you've mixed other colours into the blob of paint on your palette, don't introduce it to your tube. Steps: 1) Open your tube and squeeze the sides to open ...
Acrylic Painting Demo: Dry Brushing Soft Areas of Colour
Переглядів 6003 роки тому
This video was created to help illustrate a situation where dry brushing techniques can be used to pop areas of colour that may have fallen flat after glazing. This painting was made during an introduction to acrylics workshop I taught at Cole Gallery's online studio in the fall of 2020. Want to join me for a class? "Hydrangea On My Mind" Timelapse Process Video
Переглядів 1954 роки тому
This painting took me more than an hour altogether, but this video has been sped up 5000% to make it look easy. And that hour was fast for me, so it's not even like I can normally paint that quickly, it sometimes goes easier than other times. This piece was painting on a 7x5-inch panel with oil paint, brushes, a rubber squeegee, and a palette knife. Music: 'Pure Morning' by Epidemic Sound. Adob...

This timelapse video has been sped up to 8000% of the normal working speed, so it's going to take you through the process of painting "Calming The Nerves" much more quickly than it took me to paint it. Plus, I recorded the video over a couple of days while working - it wasn't all done at once like the video would lead you to believe. One thing I've found is that timelapse videos make the proces...

This was so very helpful Thanku 😊
Thank you! I'm so glad this was helpful :)
Thank you
You're welcome! Thank you for watching’
Finnaly i know why my dry brushing looks terrible half of the time
I hope this helps! Up close, dry brushing does look pretty messy. 💕
@@abandurkaart yes it did help, thank you, last night i did a test and i got a texture that looks almost like it were graphite or chark oil with the technic you proposed, im really satisfied. This was exactly what i was looking for
Thank you so much! I was wondering what medium to use for an isolation medium before I add the varnish.
this was a very informative video. Thank you!
Amazing you're the best artiest thank you for teaching me
Thank you! Cheers!
Too many adverts. I gave up watching
That's so sad to hear! I have no control over ads, nor do I get paid. That's how it is on UA-cam these days :( I'm sorry that you weren't able to see the video, maybe some day when you have more time, try again?)
Angela you can take the ads off if you’re not paid. I know people that demonetized as they didn’t want ads. It can be done. The ads on your channel are such that You have to watch the whole ad whereas some Chanel’s you can use a skip Hope this helps. I love your work
Love this tutorial!!!! Very good tips, skills and masterful knowledge!
Lori, you found my UA-cam!?! Thanks for watching and for your beautiful comment 😘❤️
Its a pleasure to listen to You 🙂
Thank you so much!
What make of filbert brush do you use? Thank you for your help…I am new to acrylics and I appreciate this information 👏🙏👏
Hi Rosemary! I love the Connoisseur Synthetic Mongoose. It’s not too stiff, but not too wishy washy, either 😘
Thanks for letting us know about your process. How long do you wait between finishing an acrylic painting and varnishing it?
I usually wait until the next day before I varnish, but if you paint with really thick layers and/or you’re in a humid, cool area, you may need to wait longer. The key is to make sure your painting is fully dry before varnishing.
Thank you! By the way, I have one question. I usually use a brush cleaner first, then when the brush gets clean, I apply poppy oil to it at the end. Is it better to use walnut oil and soap than a brush cleaner?
There is no one way to care for your brushes, but this is what I’ve found works best for me. I use walnut oil while painting - but for the end of the day cleaning, I use a linseed-oil based soap with water. That cleanses the brush beautifully and conditions the brush. I don’t find I need to apply another coat of oil to the brush afterwards, though that’s just one more way to keep the brush supple 😊
Why is paint on varnish better? Don't you risk brush strokes, especially on a very large painting?
I find that painting on varnish yields a more thorough coating, without the waste that naturally occurs with spray on varnish. And I haven’t had any issue with brush strokes - as the varnish I use tends to self level. But you do run the risk of bubbles. I try to make sure I go slow and watch for them - and pop them as they come up. But honestly, I do more spray varnish than brush on for convenience and speed. I’m usually pressed for a deadline and can’t wait for the painting to completely dry.
"Directionallity", I hate these made up words.
Hi Sharon! I’m sorry if this word disturbed you, but it’s not a made up word - though I do that from time to time in an attempt to be “fun”… check it out - here’s the official definition of “directionality”: www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/directionality.
After the raw umber layer how much time did u wait ?
You want to be sure that the under painting is dry - so if it’s an acrylic under painting such as in this demo, I’d wait at least a couple of hours or overnight (or longer if you’re painting with thick layers). I live in the Pacific Northwest where it’s cool and humid much of the year so the acrylics dry a little slower, so in this demo I waited to paint over the acrylics with oils until the next day.
@@abandurkaart thanks. And oil would take still more time
@@abandurkaart I stay in west coast india. It’s also v humid all the year and rains almost six months
@@sharayuranade8911 Yes, definitely more time. You could add a fast dry medium to the oil to help it dry, and work in a thin layer - but even then you could paint over it within a couple of days :)
@@sharayuranade8911 you'll experience the slower dry times as well, then :)
Hi dear no videos since one year. Hope all is good
Hi Sharayu! I know it, so sorry. I have been experiencing some long Covid symptoms but am slowly feeling relief. I have a video half made and as soon as I’m better, I plan to finish it and post it then get some more posted!! Thank you for checking in ❤️❤️
What are you using to mix on top of? Kinda looks like paper.
You are right! This is palette paper, which I buy in a pad. I’ve tried other kinds of palettes for my acrylic painting, but they’ve never worked as well.
Thank you so much, I’ve always been reluctant to get into painting because I never could mix properly. Trying to find any video demonstrating how to actually mix colors has been impossible every video just goes over color theory and not the basic basic fundamentals of physically mixing you’ve been a life saver
Thanks, I'm so grateful for this feedback, and glad that it helped :) Happy painting!!
What brand of acrylic do you use?
I like to use M.Graham Acrylics, they are just a little less viscous than Golden, which helps them stay wet a tiny bit longer. Golden is a solid brand as well! I have a few colours in that brand also.
Are you using vine charcoal here for your drawing? And did I see that you spray fixed it before starting to paint?
Hi, Chris! I use chalk pastel pencil to draw my pieces out first - usually in a colour that I’m using a lot in the painting. Here I used a brown. Most of the time I’ll brush off the excess powder with a soft brush before painting. You can spray with workable fixatives to keep the paint pure, but in this case I didn’t spray because the pastel pigment was the same as the brown I used for the background and there was minimal dust. It’s just a matter of doing what you feel works best for you. If you thin your paint at all, I would definitely recommend spraying first.
@@abandurkaart Thanks Angela. I just watched your interview with Jed Dorsey, loved it. I'm just started to learn to paint, but you are such an inspiration to me. I really appreciate your helpful tips when it comes to acrylic painting.
@@chriswhitehouse8982 wow! Thanks, I’m so glad you found it helpful and appreciate your kind words. Good luck with your painting journey!
What brand of palette knife do you use?
In this video I’m using an RGM palette knife, I believe. I also have a couple from Poggi that I got on vacation a few years ago.
THANK YOU! I didn't understand the concept of dry brushing, and now I do. Mission accomplished.
Yay!! I’m so glad this video was helpful for you - and thanks for telling me!
This one, too, is great - you are so easy to listen to - a wonderful teacher - thanks again :)
That's so nice of you to say <3 Thanks so much!
Great practical guide, thank you
You're very welcome! Thank you for watching :)
Just watched your intervie with Jed Dorsey. You are super delightful and this kind of demo is just what I was looking for :-) Thank you!
Thanks, Kathryn! Let me know if you have any requests and I’ll consider them for my next demo video ❤️
That is a classic restoration technique, is it not, to protect the original painting and then apply touch ups on top?
Hi, Alan, that is my understanding, yes! For paintings where the artist is no longer living, touch ups are considered temporary and are done in a way that can be removed. For artists still living, we could go in and take off the varnish (the isolation coat would protect the painting and would hold onto the new painting renovation well) and do the corrections, then apply another isolation coat on top of the corrections and varnish the whole thing again when done. I just had to do one the other day!
Love this!
Thank you ❤️
This was really useful! I plan on getting a palette knife now :)
Fantastic! Thank you for watching 🎨
so interesting artwork, enjoyable watching video n nice to see your channel👍👍👍👍👍👍👌
Thank you!! 😍
Thanks for the demo. I have heard other You Tube acrylic artists disparage dry brushing and call it a "lazy technique." Not sure why, seems like a perfectly good technique.
Me, either! That's crazy. Here's my take on artmaking, and life in general: there is only one definitive: that there are NO definitives. ;)
Do you find that your pastel from your pastel pencil drawing mixes in with your paint colors at all? I like using regular (white) chalk for my drawing as it completely dissolves into my wet paint, but the drawback is you need a fairly dark background in order for it to show up well.
After drawing in pastel pencil, I always "dust" the surface of the drawing with a soft brush to remove excess dust because it can absolutely impact your paint. You could also spray with a workable fixative. But it's not usually an issue for me because I paint in layers, so the first layer mixes a little of the dust in with it.
Another excellent tutorial, thank you! I mentioned you on a video I recently posted: ua-cam.com/video/EutTqgGOON4/v-deo.html min 30:41👵
Thank you!!! I checked you out and am very honoured that you mentioned me :) You have some very lovely demo videos!! <3
